WINEMAKER

White Oak Vineyards

Randal W. Wilson is the winemaker for Wines produced at White Oak Vineyards-Alabama, and co-owner along with his wife and business partner, Dana Davis. Originally from the Alabama Gulf Coast region, Randal's love for agriculture and plants was sparked early in life as he learned from his mother, an avid gardener with an incredible green thumb throughout her lifetime. He also recalls wonderful memories of visiting his grandparents every summer on their farm in Mississippi, the only grandchild enthralled with farming.

After a stint as a submariner in the U.S. Navy following high school, Randal completed his college degree at the California Polytechnic Institute where he majored in agriculture and soil science. As part of his internship with the U.S Department of Agriculture, Randal had the opportunity to work with several local vineyards over the next year, learning the art and science of growing grapes and making fine wine in the California tradition.

Randal's thirty year career with the U.S.D.A as a district conservationist included assignments in California, Nevada, and Alabama. During these years he loved planting grape vines and experminting with wine making, dreaming of the time he could build his own vineyard and winery. When a chance to return to his home state of Alabama arose, he jumped at the opportunity and moved to Calhoun County, Alabama in 1996, buying enough land to establish a small winery operation. Calhoun County is a beautiful, rural area in the North-central part of the state, about midway between Birmingham and Atlanta, with easy access from I-20.

vinesThe first vines at White Oak were planted in 1998. Randal and Dana have planted French hybrid grapes as well as the Southern favorite, muscadines. Vines currently flourshing include red and white muscadines such as Carlos, Pam, Frye, Ison, Noble, and Regal. French hybrids, which are particularly tolerant of our warm, humid climate, include Villard Blanc, Seyval Blanc, Chardonel, Cynthiana/Norton, and Chambourcin.

vinesOur tasting room, located on the vineyard property, opened in April of 2004. We sell wine, muscadine jams, jellies, syrup, candles, logo items, and glasses. Gift baskets are also available during the holiday season or upon special request.
